Crossword Genius

Jumbos bit incomplete, defeat admitted (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

colossi

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'jumbos' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are plural nouns.
Perhaps there's a link between them I don't understand?

'bit incomplete defeat admitted' is the wordplay.
'bit' becomes 'co' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'incomplete' means to remove the last letter.
'defeat' becomes 'loss' (I've seen this in other clues).
'admitted' becomes 'in' (eg someone might be admitted into a group).
'loss'+'in'='lossin'
'lossin' with its last letter removed is 'lossi'.
'co'+'lossi'='COLOSSI'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for colossi that I've seen before include "Huge statues" , "big figures?" , "Cool sis for big people" , "huge figures" , "Giants" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
