I believe the answer is:

repressing

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'keeping' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both related to thinking as well as being present participle verbs.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'back crowd around english journalists' is the wordplay.
'back crowd' becomes 'ring' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'around' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'english' becomes 'E' (abbreviation).
'journalists' becomes 'press' (the press can mean the newspaper industry).
'e'+'press'='epress'
'ring' going around 'epress' is 'REPRESSING'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for repressing that I've seen is " Forcibly subduing".)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
