Crossword Genius

Keeping hose on the shelves, perhaps (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stocking

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'keeping hose' is the definition.
'stocking' can be an answer for 'hose' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'keeping' bit.

'on the shelves perhaps' is the wordplay.
'on' indicates putting letters inside (as in clothing 'on' a person).
'the' becomes 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects).
'shelves perhaps' becomes 'socking' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
't' going into 'socking' is 'STOCKING'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stocking that I've seen before include "Covering for foot or leg" , "an example of 1 ac [HOSE]." , "a hang-up at Christmas?" , "fireside D [DECORATION]" , "some legwear" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
