The answer and definition can be both locations as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

I cannot quite see how this works, but

'about' could be 're' ('re' means regarding or about) and 're' is found in the answer.
'european' could be 'e' (abbreviation e.g. EU) and 'e' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'port' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
