Crossword Genius

King leaves states’ wealth (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

assets

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wealth' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Personal wealth' mean 'assets' so perhaps 'wealth' could also mean 'assets')

'king leaves states'' is the wordplay.
'king leaves' becomes 'as' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'states'' becomes 'sets' (set is a kind of state).
'as'+'sets'='ASSETS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for assets that I've seen before include "Valuable property" , "Properties that have money value" , "One's valuables" , "Valuable resources" , "Advantages" .)

I've seen this clue in The Hindu.
