Knight shot on horse in Italian battle (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

marengo

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'italian battle' is the definition.
'Marengo' can be an answer for 'battle' (Marengo is an example). I'm not sure about the 'italian' bit.

'knight shot on horse' is the wordplay.
'knight shot' becomes 'ngo' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'on' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'horse' becomes 'mare' (mare is a kind of horse).
'ngo' after 'mare' is 'MARENGO'.

'in' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for marengo that I've seen before include "Battle of the Napoleonic Wars in Piedmont" , "Napoleonic victory in 1800" , "Victory for Napoleon in Italy" , "Napoleon victory; am goner (anag.)" , "battle fought in Italy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
