Crossword Genius

Labourer, dressing badly, with yen for hats (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

millinery

'hats' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'labourer dressing badly with yen' is the wordplay.
'labourer' becomes 'miner' (miner is a kind of labourer**).
'dressing' is an insertion indicator (a dressing is a kind of covering).
'badly' becomes 'ill' ('ill' can be adverbial as in 'ill-advised').
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'yen' becomes 'y'.
'miner' placed around 'ill' is 'milliner'.
'milliner'+'y'='MILLINERY'

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for millinery that I've seen before include "hat shop" , "Women's headgear" , "Women's hats, ribbons etc." , "Hat and trimmings" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
