Lamb and Teddy regularly tucked up (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

abed

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'tucked up' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'lamb and teddy regularly' is the wordplay.
'lamb' becomes 'ab' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'regularly' indicates alternate letters (regularly take one letter, leave next etc.).
The alternating letters of 'teddy' are 'ed'.
'ab'+'ed'='ABED'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for abed that I've seen before include "in his hammock awaiting Santa?" , "Tucked up for the night" , "in retirement, possibly?" , "not exactly stirring" , "Not yet up (archaic)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Everyman puzzle in The Observer.
