Crossword Genius

Lamenting golf after bankruptcy (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ruing

'lamenting' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'golf after bankruptcy' is the wordplay.
'golf' becomes 'g' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.).
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'bankruptcy' becomes 'ruin' (I've seen this before).
'g' after 'ruin' is 'RUING'.

(Other definitions for ruing that I've seen before include "full of remorse?" , "Having second thoughts" , "Regretful" , "Bitterly regretting" , "Feeling sorry for" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
