Crossword Genius

Land one Hilary's caught? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

benin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'land' is the definition.
(I know that Benin is a African country)

'one hilary's caught?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'one' could be 'i' (Roman numeral) and 'i' is located in the answer.
'hilary' could be 'benn' (politician Hilary Benn) and 'benn' is present in the leftover letters.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for benin that I've seen before include "West African republic" , "West African state, formerly called Dahomey" , "Republic in West Africa" , "part of Africa" , "Old West African kingdom from which 'bronze' sculptures were looted by the British in 1897" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
