'large body of french turned up' is the wordplay.
'large body' becomes 'corps' (corps can mean an organisation or group).
'of french' becomes 'de' ('of' in French).
'turned up' says the letters should be written backwards.
'de' reversed gives 'ed'.
'corps'+'ed'='CORPSED'

(Another definition for corpsed that I've seen is " was unable to proceed on stage".)
