Latin queen turns up without a country (5)
I believe the answer is:
niger
'country' is the definition.
(African country)
'latin queen turns up without a' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'queen' could be 'er' (short for Elizabeth Regina ie Queen Elizabeth) and 'er' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for niger that I've seen before include "African river flowing into the South Atlantic" , "The black" , "West African republic" , "Country W. of Chad" , "Land-locked country and river of W Africa" .)
