Crossword Genius

Lazy and not even dressed? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shiftless

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lazy' is the definition.
(synonyms)

'not even dressed?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'not' could be 'less' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'less' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'shift' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'and' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for shiftless that I've seen before include "lacking in initiative" , "Lazy - indolent" , "Idle" , "Like an automatic American car" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
