Leaders leave farm tour in protective gear (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

armour

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'leaders leave' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both to do with ownership as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'farm tour in protective gear' is the wordplay.
'farm tour' becomes 'u' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'protective gear' becomes 'armor' (I've seen this in another clue).
'u' put into 'armor' is 'ARMOUR'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for armour that I've seen before include "Body plate" , "Soldier's body protection" , "Protective covering for the body" , "Personal protection" , "Protective clothing" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
