Leave man with job to find pole on playing field (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

goalpost

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'pole on playing field' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'leave man with job' is the wordplay.
'leave' becomes 'go' (to go is to depart or leave).
'man with' becomes 'al' (man's name. I am not sure about the 'with' bit.).
'job' becomes 'post' (post is a kind of job).
'go'+'al'+'post'='GOALPOST'

'to find' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for goalpost that I've seen before include "One of four supporters at ends of pitch" , "Upright with net attached" , "one unfairly moved" , "One propping up the bar" , "it's unfair to move" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
