Crossword Genius

Leave word in France (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

adieu

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'leave' is the first definition.
(I've seen this before)

'word in france' is the second definition.
'adieu' can be an answer for 'word' (I have seen 'Last word' mean 'adieu' so perhaps 'word' could also mean 'adieu'). I am unsure of the 'in france' bit.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for adieu that I've seen before include "Goodbye, madame" , "Farewell to France" , "All the best" , "Farewel" , "Goodbye, monsieur" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
