Leaving things late? (7)
I believe the answer is:
testate
'late?' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'leaving things' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'things' could be 'tat' (I have seen 'Tawdry things ' mean 'tat' so perhaps 'things' could also mean 'tat') and 'tat' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for testate that I've seen before include "Person willing" , "Having left a legacy" , "Leaving a will" , "Having made a valid will" , "Dying with a will" .)
