Crossword Genius

Legendary high-flier who went down to the sea (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

icarus

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'legendary high-flier' is the definition.
'icarus' can be an answer for 'high-flier' (I've seen this before). I'm not sure about the 'legendary' bit.

I cannot understand how the remainder of the clue works.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for icarus that I've seen before include "foolish high-flier" , "His false wings melted" , "Unfortunate high-flier in Greek mythology" , "Ancient Greek who flew too close to the sun" , "Foolhardy flier" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
