Letter from Derek to some of the staff (5)

I believe the answer is:
delta
'letter' is the definition.
(Greek letter)
'derek to some of the staff' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'some' could be 'a' and 'a' is found within the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'del' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'from' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for delta that I've seen before include "sort of wing" , "Greek character" , "Area of distributaries in a river basin" , "Wing shape; Greek D" , "Multiple estuary" .)
