Like the main language? (7)
I believe the answer is:
spanish
'language?' is the definition.
(I know that Spanish is a language)
'like the main' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'like' could be 'ish' (similar in meaning) and 'ish' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'span' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for spanish that I've seen before include "Language of much of the New World" , "Language of Madrid" , "Nationality of citizen of Cadiz" , "The nationality has his naps" , "Hispanic" .)
