Both the answer and definition are adjectives. Perhaps you can see a link between them that I can't see?

'like the villain originally fair who went ginger than' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'like' could be 'y' ('y' can be similar in meaning to 'like') and 'y' is found in the answer.
'went' could be 'doubled' (doubling is a kind of going) and 'doubled' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ed' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
