Crossword Genius

Like to keep running miles, wanting direction (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

aimless

'direction' is the definition.
(I have seen 'lacking direction' mean 'aimless' so perhaps 'direction' could also mean 'aimless')

'like to keep running miles' is the wordplay.
'like' becomes 'as'.
'to keep' indicates putting letters inside.
'running' is an anagram indicator (the letters run around to different places).
'miles' with letters rearranged gives 'imles'.
'as' going around 'imles' is 'AIMLESS'.

'wanting' is the link.

(Other definitions for aimless that I've seen before include "Without purpose or target" , "Without purpose or direction" , "With no plan or programme" , "Rambling" , "Like characters in 5D {WAITING FOR GODOT]" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
