Crossword Genius

Like to take a gamble in seconds (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

abets

'seconds' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'like to take a gamble' is the wordplay.
'like' becomes 'as'.
'to take' is an insertion indicator (inserted letters are taken in).
'a gamble' becomes 'bet' (bet is a kind of gamble).
'as' going around 'bet' is 'ABETS'.

'in' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for abets that I've seen before include "Aids in wrong-doing" , "Assists in wrongdoing" , "Aids and encourages" , "Assists in crime" , "Assists dealer, say" .)

I've seen this clue in The Globe and Mail.
