Linger too long at party, abandoning assistant and getting drunk on Soave (8)
I believe the answer is:
overstay
'linger too long' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'on soave' is the wordplay.
'on' becomes 'over' (I've seen this in other clues).
'soave' becomes 'stay' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'over'+'stay'='OVERSTAY'
'at party abandoning assistant and getting drunk' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may be part of another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for overstay that I've seen before include "Linger too long" , "Hang around too long" , "Leave too late" , "take advantage of hospitality?" , "Remain too long" .)
