Crossword Genius

Liverpool band almost without rhythm (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

beatles

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'liverpool band' is the definition.
'beatles' can be an answer for 'band' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'liverpool' bit.

'almost without rhythm' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'rhythm' could be 'beat' (synonyms) and 'beat' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'les' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for beatles that I've seen before include "Best ale for the Liverpudlian group" , "Be least among fabulous four" , "British pop band of the 60s" , "The Fab Four composer-singers" , "Famous pop group" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
