Crossword Genius

Local inhabitant puts it up in part of the church (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

native

'local inhabitant' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'it up in part of the church' is the wordplay.
'up' is an anagram indicator.
'in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'part of the church' becomes 'nave' ('nave' is part of 'church').
'it' with letters rearranged gives 'ti'.
'ti' placed into 'nave' is 'NATIVE'.

'puts' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for native that I've seen before include "Belonging to one by birth" , "One who belongs to place by birth" , "Local inhabitant" , "Indigenous person" , "One born in a certain place" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
