… locate stand for Spooner where bets are placed (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

racetrack

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'where bets are placed' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.

'locate stand for spooner' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'stand' could be 'rack' (synonyms) and 'rack' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for racetrack that I've seen before include "Spa, say" , "Brands Hatch, perhaps" , "Newmarket, say" , "Competitive course" , "Circuit" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
