Location of two maidens in solstice? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

midsummer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'location of two maidens' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'solstice?' is the second definition.
(midsummer is a kind of solstice)

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for midsummer that I've seen before include "It's a mad time" , "period" , "June twenty first" , "Play with fairies and 'mechanicals'" , "Fantasy in late June" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
