Crossword Genius

Long to return carrying silver dish with piping (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

haggis

'dish with piping' is the definition.
(haggis is traditionally served as bagpipes play)

'long to return carrying silver' is the wordplay.
'long' becomes 'sigh' (both can mean to yearn).
'to return' says the letters should be written backwards.
'carrying' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'silver' becomes 'Ag' (Ag is the chemical symbol for silver).
'sigh' reversed gives 'hgis'.
'hgis' enclosing 'ag' is 'HAGGIS'.

(Other definitions for haggis that I've seen before include "Scottish dish boiled in sheep's stomach" , "boil-in-bag meal" , "Scottish grub" , "Dish boiled in a skin made from an animal's stomach" , "Traditional Scotch pudding" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
