Crossword Genius

Look around private houses as landlord (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

innkeeper

'landlord' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'look around private houses' is the wordplay.
'look' becomes 'peek' (peek can mean to look at quickly).
'around' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'private' becomes 'inner' (as in one's private or inner thoughts).
'houses' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'peek' in reverse letter order is 'keep'.
'keep' inserted inside 'inner' is 'INNKEEPER'.

'as' is the link.

(Other definitions for innkeeper that I've seen before include "local manager" , "Pub landlord" , "Manager who made extra provision for visitors" , "Job" , "For example, Mistress Quickly" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sunday Times and The Times.
