Look embarrassed when savaged (5)

I believe the answer is:
gored
'savaged' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are past participle verbs, I can't understand how they can define each other.
'look embarrassed' is the wordplay.
'look' becomes 'go' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'embarrassed' becomes 'red' (someone may blush or go red when embarrassed).
'go'+'red'='GORED'
'when' is the link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for gored that I've seen before include "Pierced - blush (can be 5 or 2,3)" , "Injured by a horn or tusk" , "Pierced by bull's horns" , "like an unfortunate matador?" , "Pierced with horn or tusk" .)
