Crossword Genius

Looked right though, instead, wrong (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

stared

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'looked' is the definition.
(staring is a kind of looking)

'right though instead wrong' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'right' could be 'ar' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'ar' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'sted' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for stared that I've seen before include "Looked fixedly (at something)" , "Treads (anag)" , "Look fixedly at" , "Subjected to prolonged gaze" , "Looked long and hard at" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
