Crossword Genius

Looking at following orders without objection (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

eying

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'looking' is the definition.
(eye can mean to look at something)

'at following orders without objection' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'at' could be 'in' (synonymous in some cases - eg at school, in school) and 'in' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for eying that I've seen before include "Observing" , "Interested in visual appearance" , "Fixated on" , "Watching closely" , "In the process of close scrutiny" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
