Crossword Genius

Loosen and remove family member's top (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

untie

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'loosen' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'family member's top' is the wordplay.
'family member' becomes 'auntie' (I've seen this before).
'top' means to remove the first letter.
'auntie' with its first letter taken away is 'UNTIE'.

'and remove' is the link.
This may not be correct. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for untie that I've seen before include "Open a knot" , "Set free" , "Release, loosen" , "Release (knots)" , "Loosen ropes or knots" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
