Lot of team taken aback, with member put on the back foot (6)

I believe the answer is:

disarm

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'put on the back foot' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are verbs in their base form, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'lot of team taken aback with member' is the wordplay.
'lot of' means to remove the last letter (I've seen 'lots of' mean this (the majority of the word)).
'team' becomes 'side' (both can mean a sports team).
'taken aback' says the letters should be written in reverse.
'with' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'member' becomes 'arm' (member can mean a limb).
'side' with its last letter removed is 'sid'.
'sid' reversed gives 'dis'.
'dis'+'arm'='DISARM'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for disarm that I've seen before include "Allay suspicions" , "Render defenceless" , "Win the confidence (of)" , "Remove weapons from" , "Do away with weaponry" .)
