Crossword Genius

Loud cheers and mocking to welcome daughter (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tawdry

'loud' is the definition.
(I know that loud can be written as tawdry)

'cheers and mocking to welcome daughter' is the wordplay.
'cheers' becomes 'ta' (both can mean thank you).
'and' says to put letters next to each other.
'mocking' becomes 'wry' (I've seen this in another clue).
'to welcome' is an insertion indicator (inserted letters are welcomed in).
'daughter' becomes 'd' (genealogical abbreviation).
'wry' going around 'd' is 'wdry'.
'ta'+'wdry'='TAWDRY'

(Other definitions for tawdry that I've seen before include "Cheap and gaudy" , "Cheap and shoddy" , "Showy and gaudy but without real value" , "Cheap; sleazy" , "Showy, cheap; sordid" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
