Loving to be cuddled when shown the way (4)

I believe the answer is:
fond
'loving' is the definition.
(similar in meaning)
'cuddled when shown the way' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'when' could be 'on' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'on' is located in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'to be' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for fond that I've seen before include "Affectionate - tender" , "Feeling affection, maybe foolish" , "Partial to" , "Keen on; indulgent" , "Affectionate, maybe foolish" .)
