Crossword Genius

Mail going away to remote settlement (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

outpost

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'remote settlement' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'mail going away' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'mail' could be 'post' (synonyms) and 'post' is found within the answer.
'away' could be 'out' (synonyms) and 'out' is located in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'to' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for outpost that I've seen before include "Remote place" , "Remote part of the country" , "Distant office, settlement" , "isolated stronghold" , "A distant branch or settlement" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
