Make a speech in the gutter (5)
I believe the answer is:
spout
This clue might be a double definition.
'make a speech' is the first definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how they can define each other.
'the gutter' is the second definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?
'in' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for spout that I've seen before include "Projecting lip, on a kettle say" , "Mouth of a kettle" , "Talk at length; part of kettle" , "Declaim; throw out in a spout" , "Hold forth at length" .)
