Man courting a woman may give diamonds, say, and gold (6)
I believe the answer is:
suitor
'man courting' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'say and gold' is the wordplay.
'say' becomes 'suit' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'gold' becomes 'or' ('or' is the heraldic name for gold).
'suit'+'or'='SUITOR'
'a woman may give diamonds' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for suitor that I've seen before include "He pays court to a woman" , ". . . he woos his girl" , "A man wooing" , "He woos a maid" , "Man pursuing a woman for marriage" .)
