Managed to get rid of and to carry out a search (7)
I believe the answer is:
ransack
'a search' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'managed to get rid of' is the wordplay.
'managed' becomes 'ran' (both can mean organised or was in charge of).
'to get rid of' becomes 'sack' (as in sacking a worker).
'ran'+'sack'='RANSACK'
'and to carry out' is the link.
I am not very happy about this link. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for ransack that I've seen before include "Search thoroughly and roughly" , "Examine thoroughly" , "Rummage, rifle" , "Search thoroughly and destructively" , "Search (a place) thoroughly" .)
