Crossword Genius

Marble town in NE Scotland? (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

elgin

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'marble town' is the definition.
'elgin' can be an answer for 'town' (I've seen this before). I'm unsure of the 'marble' bit.

'in ne scotland?' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'in' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for elgin that I've seen before include "Scottish earl who took statues from the Parthenon" , "English lord" , "Scottish admin centre" , "Scottish town on the River Lossie" , "Ingle (anag.)" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
