Margaret breaking scholar Giovanni's heart? It strikes a chord (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

arpeggio

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a chord' is the definition.
(I know that Arpeggio is a type of chord)

'margaret breaking scholar giovanni's heart? it strikes' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'margaret' could be 'peg' and 'peg' is found in the answer.
'giovanni' could be 'i' (where the crossword setter is 'Giovanni') and 'i' is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'argo' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for arpeggio that I've seen before include "A broken chord" , "Notes played in quick succession" , "Notes of a chord played in rapid succession" , "Pianist's exercise" , "Opera gig (anagram)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
