Crossword Genius

Material in US state teacher removed from capital (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nylon

'material' is the definition.
(nylon is a kind of material)

'us state teacher removed from capital' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'state' could be 'ny' (abbreviation for New York the US state) and 'ny' is found within the answer.
'from' could be 'o' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'o' is found in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'in' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for nylon that I've seen before include "may be damaged by running" , "Unaccompanied part song" , "The first synthetic fibre" , "Stocking; polymer" , "Artificial fibre" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
