Crossword Genius

Meagre usurer after shilling (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

slender

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'meagre' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'usurer after shilling' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'shilling' could be 's' (abbreviation e.g. Lsd - pounds, shillings, pence) and 's' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'lender' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for slender that I've seen before include "Spare" , "Thin or narrow" , "Slight, slim" , "Slight in form" , "inadequate" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
