Mean being ready to fight (5-6)
I believe the answer is:
tight-fisted
'mean' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'being ready to fight' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'being' could be 'ted' (Ted is an example) and 'ted' is located in the answer.
an anagram of 'fight' is 'ightf' which is present in the answer.
The remaining letters 'tis' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for tight-fisted that I've seen before include "Miserly" , "Stingy (informal)" , "near" , "Mean" .)
