Ross

I believe the answer is:

pepper

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'pelt' is the definition.
(synonyms)

'member of parliament importing very soft' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'soft' could be 'pp' (musical abbreviation for pianissimo) and 'pp' is found in the answer.
'member' could be 'peer' (I have seen 'Member of Lords ' mean 'peer' so perhaps 'member' could also mean 'peer') and 'peer' is located in the leftover letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for pepper that I've seen before include "Capsicum" , "Hot spice" , "hit by gunshot" , "Pungent seasoning and vegetable" , "Condiment - discharge shot liberally" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
