Metal once found in bottom of fruit? (7)
I believe the answer is:
plumbum
'metal once' is the definition.
(Latin name for lead)
'bottom of fruit?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'bottom' could be 'bum' (synonyms) and 'bum' is found within the answer.
'fruit?' could be 'plum' (plum is a kind of fruit) and 'plum' is found in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'found in' acts as a link.
(Another definition for plumbum that I've seen is " Lead".)
I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
