Metaphors describing united groups of performers (7)

I believe the answer is:
troupes
'groups of performers' is the definition.
'troupes' can be an answer for 'groups' (I have seen 'Groups of entertainers ' mean 'troupes' so perhaps 'groups' could also mean 'troupes'). I'm not certain of the 'of performers' bit.
I can't explain the remainder of the clue.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for troupes that I've seen before include "Groups of entertainers" , "performers of Swan Lake" , "The acrobatic ones" .)
