Crossword Genius

Midlander beginning to broadcast game, we hear (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

brummie

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'midlander' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'beginning to broadcast game we hear' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'game' could be 'rum' (rum is a kind of game) and 'rum' is found in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for brummie that I've seen before include "Ozzy Osbourne perhaps" , "One from Birmingham" , "As a city dweller" , "Midlander" , "Urbanite of the Midlands" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
